EGGS

Laid on the leaves, stems, and flowers of their host plants, the Black Swallowtail’s eggs are round.

Older eggs develop a brown ring.

CATERPILLAR

The immature caterpillar is black with a white patch, called a “saddle,” on its back.

As it grows and sheds its skin, the caterpillar’s coloration changes to bright green with black stripes and yellow dots. When mature, it securely attaches itself to a stick or plant stem with silk threads from its spinneret and sheds its skin one last time.
